What size moving truck to use?
Question:I have to move in a week and I am trying to pick a truck size at Uhaul but I can't decide. I have a small one bedroom apartment. I would like to move everything in one trip. I am trying to decide between the 17 foot or the 24 foot truck. Here is a list of all the furniture and number of boxes we will be moving:
One full size bed
2 large dressers
1 small dresser
1 desk
4 chairs
small dining table
3 medium bookshelves
1 big couch
1 king size Corduroy bean bag sofa
1 big tv
tv stand
1 headboard
1 large framed picture
23 large tuperware storage containers
20 small-medium boxes of stuff
1 big computer monitor and tower
ok, so that is all our stuff...should we use the 17 foot or the 24 foot to move it all in one trip. The other thing I need to consider is that the 24 foot truck might be a hassle to drive and park at the new place.
Answers:
Always get a bigger one than you think you might need. A second trip with a small truck is more expensive.
Easy, Rent the Bigger Truck. No matter what you think, you always have more crap than you believe. Ask your wife. And if you're worried about the bigger truck being harder to park, forget about it. People yield to a bigger truck and most especially U-Hauls because everyone knows that whoever is driving a Uhaul doesn't know what the Fark they're doing anyway. AND, you can run over bigger things with a bigger truck.
Or you could rent the smaller one but believe me, "mom's attic" doesn't hold near what your closets do.
good luck
I operate a moving company, and I would recommend the 17' truck. However your ability to load will determine your space requirements almost as much as the volume you are moving. Be sure you have an adequate supply of pads to protect your furniture pieces and use them at the bottom of the load as "base" build upward with items of decreasing weight to fill the truck squarely to the roof. Move front to back in two to three foot "tiers" and you will easily get it all on a 17' truck.
Go with the big truck. It is better to have too much room than to have to make two trips. A 24' truck is not any harder to drive and the gas will be the same for a local move. You could get all the stuff you mentioned in a 17 ft. truck if you know how to pack it properly, but since you asked this question, you don't.
If you pack it just right and tight you will be fine with the 17 ft...
Remember you don't want your items flying all over the place if you get too big a size that just might happen.. You would be amazed at what you can get into a truck that size. Good luck with your move..
