How much should this cost?

Question:I have a single door at the back of my house and i want a contractor to put in double French doors. How much do you think the labor would be to take down the wall enough to fit the double doors?

The house is aluminum siding and plaster on the inside. The door is 62"x 80 high. nothing special..

Any ideas?

Answers:
This is one of those jobs that sounds easy but can get complicated in a hurry. the siding will have to come down to allow the installation of the header and door. Hopefully you don't run in to and electrical wires. then it all has to be trimed inside and out. It is not like you can just cut the siding and slide the door in. I would get at least three estimates, and don't be afraid to ask for references.

$500
A good quality hardwood set of french doors, will set you back a couple grand, or more. Then to demolition inside and out, re-frame with a new header, assuming there is clearance above for the larger dimensioned lumber, and redo everything, should run about another two to three grand.
cutting the hole and framing it out with a new header can be done in less then half a day. if you supply the doors, frame, molding, nails, caulk, lumber and paint then i would be able to do it for a couple of hundred.
All of the contractors I have found cost about $25-$40 per hour and 2 guys should be able to do this in about 6-8 hours at the most
Plant 32 is sooooooooooooo right on this one. You never know how long these types of jobs will take. Aside from all that's been mentioned, there's the outside stair system to consider as well. You might even need a new porch, or a deck, or whatever. Good luck.
I had a regular door installed and it cost me 200 so for them to do that kind of work it will probably be 500- 900 dollars
