How do I prepare a base to install granite tile countertops?

Question:I plan on removing and discarding current tops. Also, I would like to butt the tiles together so the grout lines are as small as possible. Is this a good idea and what type of grout should I use? I've heard some say epoxy.

Answers:
Go to the local setting materials supply house and purchase the proper backerboard for the tops, purchase Thinset either white or gray(your preference) and then get your grout. Minimum grout joint is 1/8"(for several reasons). Don't use epoxy grout. Use regular grout. Make sure to seal your tiles and seal the grout. A good brand of grout is either Bonsal or Custom. Both come in a variety of colors. Also, grout is either sanded or unsanded. If the grout joint is less than 1/4", use unsanded; 1/4" or larger, use sanded.

Make sure your base cabinets are level(they made need a shim or two.)

I used 3/4" AC plywood, 1/2" tile backer board and acrylic modified thinset to put it down in the house I am building.
One layer of 3/4 inch water resistant plywood and one layer of atleast 1/4 inch backerboard but would recommend 1/2 inch. Use an acrylic fortified mortar for adhesion and the color grout of your choice and call it a day...
