My air conditioner doesn't completely fill my window...?

Question:The only window in my room is 48" wide, but my window unit air conditioner, with its wings fully extended, is only 36.5" wide. Right now I'm using cardboard and tape to fill in the remainder of the window, but it looks pretty bad and obviously its not great insulation from the outdoor elements. Does anyone have any suggestions for products that I can use to fill in the remainder of my window?

Answers:
go to home depot... menards or any home supply store and tell them you want a piece of plexiglass..and what sizes and i think theyll cut it for you.. this will make the appearance alot better and will also do the same work as the cardboard only better.. if they dont cut it..do it yourself..use a strong holding waterproof clear to white tape to seal the plexiglass in place or use some caulking.. rubbing the caulking gnetly into the crease of plexiglass and wall or window frame where connects..when your ready to remove window air conditioner this will be a cinch and you can reuse the plexiglass the next year and after

Only thing I can think of is to use plywood, get Lowe's or Home Depot to cut it up to your size of the opening.
you can get sheets of foam insulation at H.D, or lowes that you can easily cut to fit the space looks better thsan plywood and also insulates
We had this same problem at our clubhouse; We solved the problem by buy ing a sheet 4x8 of that blue foam board and cut it to fit the needed space; Great insulator and doesn*t look bad when you paint it to match the house or if you have a brick house just paint it white that goes with anything. Cut the foam with a electric carving knife. or razor knife. . a sheet costs about $8.00 so you will have plenty to work with if you make a mistake.
