A/C and basement windows.?

Question:I live in a basement apartment with two "basement sized" windows. They slide to the left to open. Last summer we roasted in here (you'd think the basement would be COOLER), and I want to get a/c's. I have tried the portable ones but after spending 350.00, it stopped working after 3 months (due to how far i had to run the "exhaust" tubing thing. I haven't found a/c's small enough to work in just the 1/2 of the windows, so am thinking I have to take the windows out some how. They are metal, and believe they are imbedded into the building. Any way for me (and no my land lord won't help me, I asked) to get the windows out and leave the frame so I can get an a/c so we don't roast like stuffed turkeys this summer?

Answers:
Most slider windows can be removed from the frame just by lifting up to clear the lower track and gently pulling in and down once the window clears the frame. Sometimes the fixed window will have a small screw that has to be removed before it can be lifted out .. Open the slider slightly and try this. Should only take a few minutes. Stay cool

If you get a dehumidifier going down there it will feel a lot better. Usually people with central air conditioners shut off vent in their basements in the summertime.

Those metal frames may be VERY hard to remove, in fact many times that kind of window frame gets broken and not able to be reinstalled again. Best advise: Expensive to remedy your problem, since its a rental, buying expensive equipment is generally not the answer. Cheaper to move.
