My 3-Prong Plug has an Unknown White coating -- Why?
Question:I have a pond...that pond uses two pumps...those pumps have 3-prong plugs that go into a outlet near the pond. I just set up my pond today and noticed that the 3-prongs on both plugs have this strange white-like coating on them...What is that? Can i remove it...Can this be a problem for my pond...can it cause short-circuits? How did they get there?
Answers:
This is called oxidization (rust).
Specifically aluminum oxide.
Just caused by the reaction of the metal on the plug and the weather.
Will eventually corrode the plug.
Go to home depot and ask for an outdoor rated male cord connector(plug).
Replace existing plug with new.
Enjoy your pond and be safe.
(simpler than it sounds. you'll figure it out. its kinda easy. the home depot guy can show you on the replacement plug.
its fine, cords used for water pumps or in an outdoor setting tend to get that film on there , it is slight corrosion staring to happen, take a pice of steel wool or some light grit sandpaper and you can clean it up and make it shiny again , but there is really no need , it doesnt effect your pond . I would just check to make sure the pump or cords are rated for outdoor use, which I suspect they are , its common and not a problem ..good luck
Remove the plug spacers and plug them in!
