A 6'X10' hole digging machine that isnt a backho?

Question:me and my buddy are digging a hole that is 8 inches deep, we need to do a 6'X10' area, and a 2.5'X50' area (future walkway and patio). unfortunately we cant get a backhoe up his steep backyard. so we have been doing it by hand and it is taking for ever bc his soil is very rocky and clay. we used a ditch digger for the ditch, and was hopping there was a machine like that for bigger holes, not just trenches. does one exist?

This may not be helpful but I know you can rent a smaller earth mover called a "dingo". It is small enough to get through a backyard gate and highly maneuverable but I don't know how well it would work on a grade. I've used them several times before and is definitely the way to go when doing major yard work.

I don't know if you can get any machinery into the area you are working on - but consider if there is a local summer school with a landscaping class that could help you - or have a 'dirt moving' party - BB Que, beer, etc. Have families with kids 'compete' with dirt carrying for inexpensive prizes.

Perhaps renting a heavy duty garden tiller to break up the dirt some might loosen things up a bit.
A bobcat? That might be a little overkill for that small of an area.

You are better off with a tiller to break up the soil and paying some buddies beer to haul it off.
There are smaller machines like a skid steer loader, but you are probably doing it about as easily as you can for that small of a project.
you can rent a gas powered hole auger from a rental place or home depot might rent them they make digging holes a snap.
