There was an old septic tank in my yard, part of the the top caved in What can i fill it in with.?
Question:can i break the rest of top & and cave it in .And fill it with sand & gravel.
Answers:
If it's no longer used you can fill it with whatever you like (putting a bag of lime on the bottom first might not be a bad idea). Go ahead and dump away.
yes break the rest of the top down into the tank - this will ensure you do not get any voids in corners when filling.
Then fill it with any non-organic material that you can get hold off - rubble, hardcore, sand , etc - finishing off with a foot or so of top soil - unless you are going to concrete over - in which case finish with hardcore up to the underside of the concrete.
hardcore stones rocks gravel it needs to be well compacted to prevent accidents in the future
This is actually a big problem in many areas where the municipality has upgraded to public sewer from the old individual septic tanks, once hooked to the public line a lot of tanks have just been left abandoned and after time they start to degrade and fall in like yours has. There may be some codes related to filling in of the old tank or in some cases removal might be required due to bio-hazardous waste that was never pumped out when it was abandoned. Most likly just filling it in with the proper materials will do the job nicely but check with the proper agencies to make sure you are doing right for where you live.
