Rather than remove paint from stair strings I want to fix softwood veneer before staining. Supplier of veneer?

Question:

Answers:
I have obtained self-stick wood veneer at Rockler Woodworking & Hardware (www.rockler.com). This is about 1/16" thick and comes in several wood species. You can apply this to the stringers, fill the joints with a stainable filler, then stain. Installation requires careful workmanship since it's very difficult to move the material once you apply it.

Menard's has veneer samples that can be ordered in different sizes. Therefore, I'm sure Lowe's, Home Depot, etc... would have it also. I believe the samples were near counters & cabinets.
