Can you put hardware cloth behind a wall plug and light switch?

Question:My husband is closing in a wall in the basement with hardware cloth. There is a light switch and a wall plug attached to the wood studs. He has placed the hardware cloth on the wall that leaves a 2 inch gap behind the plug and there is no room around the light switch...its right up against the plastic plate.

I told him there should be some room around it so that current doesn't jump...Should he give it room or will it be fine.

My father was a electrician and his words are echoing in my head that this is a bad thing...too bad hes passed away...

Answers:
if the wires are properly connected to the switch everthing is ok,,, "current" does not jump! if you are worried about arcing
that should not be a problem because the hardware cloth is not electrically connected,,, the electricity would have no path to anywheres

If it now metal or wet there is not a problem. Don't worry.
Keep the hardware cloth away from the box openings and you will have no problems.
