Is it possible to build a stone porch ourselves?

Question:My husband and I are trying to find a porch idea for our brick ranch home. We don't want a deck and would like something different than the traditional concrete. We have looked at do-it-yourself books, but none of them talk about building a porch with stones. We don't know if it is possible or if it is something that will be outrageously expensive. Anyone have any ideas??

Answers:
That's a really hard question to answer, since I'm not sure what you mean by a stone porch. In other words, are you talking about building the entire porch out of stone, stacked up how high, or are you going to build a frame and just use stones for the walking surface, etc. You might check out some of the home improvement stores, since a lot of them can give you information on design and construction. Then you'll just have to decide whether the effort and hassle is worth the savings or if you'll be happier with the result if you have it built by experts.

Just google "stone porch" and you'll come up with a number of web sites that provide instructions on how to do it yourself.such as this one

You can also find places where you can purchase materials.
I'm sure if the cavemen could build Stonehenge all those years ago , you shouldn't have any problem doing a porch .
