I want to update my ugly old wrought iron front porch support posts.?

Question:can i leave them for support and enclose them in masonry or wood? Is this feasable or should I have a contractor replace them?

Answers:
If your old supports are structurally sound? enclosing them is the best and most inexpensive way to go. Without seeing a photo of your house I can give you no input as far as the style I would suggest... but brick is a simple way to enclose the older supports and then you can either leave the brick exposed or plaster them over to reach your desired style. If you don't want to have a rectangular effect and wish to go for the coloum type of support, go by Home Depot and ask at their front desk. they have all the right stuff and usually have actual classes for many types of home improvement projects. If you have the money.. have a contractor check it out. a good way to do this is to have several contractors come out to bid the project. This will give you many good ideas and let you know wether your supports are sound without spending a lot of money. Good luck with your project.

wow if you enclosed them you'd have some large pillars lol wood would be easier to work with. However I'd choose brick if it went with the house exterior of course if you dont know how to lay brick it could be an expensive project to pay someone for.
You can replace them. If it is wrought iron then more than likely there is not much support. Just replace one at a time, just in case. Good Luck.
