Need to cut wood siding.what tool is best?
Question:I need to make space big enough to fit a rough in for a door intercom I'm installing. What would be the best tool to make the cut? It needs to be about 2 1/2 inches deep and large enough to fit the rough in. Thanks.

First...The depth of your 'rough in' is only important if you cut your hole over a stud. Don't do this. Make sure that your hole is entirely between studs. You don't mention the type of wood siding. A dutch lap would be harder to cut than a lap board. In any event you want the top of the penetration to be at the bottom of a siding panel. (assuming it is not vertical siding). That way you can slide a small piece of flashing over the box to make it more water tight.
I would use a drill, and a keyhole saw to make the cut, if you over cut the box, you will have to repair the siding, or face the inevitable water damage.
Caulk well. Penetrations in a wall are the number one cause of rot, and water damage. Proper caulk maintenance is an ongoing affair.
id use an axe
I would use a roto-zip with the circular saw attachment.
If you do not have one you can drill a hole through with a hole cutter (size just smaller than the opening) and cut the edges with a hand saw assuming it is a square.
Sawzall, RotoZip, or saber saw. If you're not used to a sawzall (takes some practice using one held away from the cutting surface to control depth of cut), or a RotoZip (tends to want to wander - you could tack a guide board to the wall to control it), a saber saw is probably the easiest tool. Just drill a pilot hole in each corner of the cut, to give you a starting point to insert the blade.
use a skill saw with a 7 and a quarter inch fine blade.good luck.
