Cracked Window Putty.?

Question:I have tried using new putty but it doesn't seem to bond smoothly is there a filler I can use before painting?

Answers:
What composition of window do you have? If metal, try cleaning up the effected area and rough it up with a wire brush or course grit sand paper. This should help the putty bond. You can do the same thing with wood, but make sure you have no moisture or rot.

Replace the putty.
it would be better and probably simpler and cheaper in teh long term to replace it
cheap skate get double glazing fitted
You have to let the putty dry for a couple of weeks and it is totally hard before painting.
If the putty's dry enough to crack, it's time to reputty the window. Otherwise, you're just going to have more pieces crack and fall out.
Buy some glazing compound in a tub. To apply it, you grab a chunk, make a ball, roll it into a strip about 1/2" thick, and press it into place. Smooth it out and press it into place with either a putty knife or a glazing tool. The new stuff will not stick unless the surfaces are dry and clean. Use a wire brush to bust up old paint. Use bleach to kill mold. The glazing will not dry for awhile. Paint it once it is dry. Hard to be more specific without looking at what you have to work with. Good luck!
You have to strip or scrap out all the old putty and replace it with new window putty or window caulking. The window caulking would be the easiest to use. Make sure it says paint-able caulk and the caulking tube and after it dries you should be able to paint it and you will be good to go.
First you must remove all of the old putty, re-point the panes if necessary, clean all surfaces, and allow to dry. If the windows are aluminum you will need an acid meant to prepare the surface.
You can use a tool called a 'Prazi Putty Chaser' to remove the old putty. They are available at HarborFreight.com. Go to a glass shop for the rest of the supplies, and advice on pointing glass panes.
"Window Putty " is called glaze. You need to remove the old glaze and replace it with new. Dremal makes an attachment just for the job, or you can do it with a chisel, but either way you have to be very careful not to break the glass. A lot of glaze has little pieces of metal under it holding the glass in. These are called glazing points. Some may even have finish nails holding the glass in and some may only have glaze holding the glass in. Just some things to be aware of.
Dig it out and replace.I did mine myself lol, letit dry before you paint.
