What is the best way to sand my deck in order to prepare it for stain?
Question:I want to restain my deck, so I will have to sand it. Should I rent a professional sander, or should I use something simple like a hand sander? What is the fastest and most efficient way of sanding a deck?

Use a power washer. This will not only clean the deck, but actually remove a very, very thin layer of the wood - effectively giving it a light sanding. It will also be a lot quicker than trying to sand it.
We are restaining our deck too, and are not planning on sanding it. We are cleaning it with a pressure washer and a deck washing solution, waiting for it to dry, and staining.
i rented a floor sander and it worked great then i used a hand sander on the rails
Most decks are not 100% level plank to plank so renting a professional floor sander wont work because you will end up getting caught up on the nails or screws.
Therefore, hand sanding, unfortunately is the best way to go. It takes a little more work, but will look the best.
