Which tools and techniques are best for polishing marble?

Question:This will be a small home project with an existing slab of marble. It was finished on one side but the finish has dulled with age and neglect. We are on a tight budget so would like to use simple hand or home power tools. We do not want to buy or rent heavy equipment for this project. Any suggestions are welcome!
