Putting up a ceiling fan?

Question:i want to put in a ceiling fan, but ive got an interesting roof configuration.

Im in a building, and my ceiling is sheetrock that was placed over the old ceiling, at a distance of about 2 inches. It seems to me that i can cut a hole in the sheetrock, and drill the mouting box striaght into the old ceiling, which seems to be plaster or somthing like that (its an old building). The old ceiling seems to be quick strong, can i use it hang the fan from?

If not what are the other options? I dont have accses to ceiling joists for a regular mounting bracket.

Thanks!

Answers:
Without knowing what the old ceiling is, I would be afraid to try it. Besides the problem of the old ceiling being strong enough to hold the fan, I would be concerned about the ability of the screws to hold in the old ceiling. I think it is more likely that the screws will pull out than the old ceiling would come loose.

The weight of the fan is only part of the problem. The box also has to be able to handle the inertia of the blades turning and the vibration from the motor.

Unless you can get two or three screws deep into some wood, I wouldn't hang a fan there.
