Can I use a window mount air conditioner inside without putting it in a window?
Question:I have a window mount air conditioner that doesn't fit inside my house windows. Is there any reason I can't just set it on a table inside and use it inside rather than mounted in a window?
Answers:
An A/C works by pulling heat out of the inside air, and blowing it outside. If you set an airconditioner inside, you'll actually have a net increase in heat, because the process isn't 100% efficient.
You've got two options-
--Cut a hole in an exterior wall and mount the A/C unit there (there are kits to do just this)
-or-
--Buy a an A/C unit that's specifically meant to be used inside. These units are about the size of a mini-fridge and have a large (12" diameter) piece of flexible duct that you stick out a window.
Wall-mounting is the best solution. But if you're in a place where this isn't an option, than the interior A/C is your only choice. The portable units run about $500-600.
The hot air blowing out of the condenser will be as much , if not more , than the cold air coming from the vents. It will more tha likely cancel itself out.I wouldnt waste my time doing it.You will be heating and cooling the room at the same time.
Do you like to have a waterfall in your living room? When the air conditioner runs, there is a drain at the bottom of it that allows the water to run out if there is high humidity causing condensation within the unit. That is why if you read the directions when you install one of these they, the front of the unit has to be leaning upward so it drains properly. If you don't want it in the window, get an air conditioner that is free standing.
In case of leaking of the refrigerant, can be potentially harmful. Also, will collect condensation and drip water all over.
It has to dissipate heat, if it dissipates it inside, you will not cool the house.
Go to Home Depot, they now make units that sit on a floor and have a tube venting the heat out side. I'm sure you can make a flexable tube work on your window.
Plan B would be to set your window unit up in a door going outside. You're going to have to do some inventing to make it work.
no any a/c unit blows hot air out the back side of it that is why the back half hangs outside cut a hole in the wall and frame it in would be another way of doing it
