I have a dryer wired for a 4 prong outlet, I need to hook a 3 wire up to it because my outlet is a 3 prong. How
Question:It's an Amana Distinctions, the wall plug is in an older home and is 3 prong. When I hooked the center wire of the 3 wire cord to the ground portion on the plate, the dryer didn't turn on. What do I do with that hole that is I believe the neutral wire ? What is a jumper cord and am I putting the middle wire of the 3 wire cord to the wrong location? It came with a 4 wire cord - need to switch it to a 3 wire cord to plug into outlet. Store told me to plug the ground cord where the ground wire is on the plate (no results) --- below is the best I can design the plate on the back of the dryer.

just change the cord,,
Just go to Lowe's or Home depot and get the 3 prong cord. It is not hard to change it.And the cord is not all that expensive.
Call an appliance repair guy--he will come and hook up the correct wires ---either that or you may burn the house down---hope you have good insurance. Don't be silly--you have no idea what your doin --give up let some one else fix the problem.
change the outlet. There's a reason for the fourth lead
You need to get a 3 wire cord from an appliance store, or you can hook up the ground wire to the neutral, it wont hurt a thing. On a 3 wire you only have black-hot, white-neutral, and green-ground. So you dont really have to have that red wire. Just get a new cord and hook it up like the last one. If you dont have a place for your ground wire, like i said before you can just hook it up to the white wire...NOT black wire.
Instead of changing the plug on the dryer, why don't you obtain the proper receptacle from your local hardware store, and wire that into the wall instead? The dryer should also be on a dedicated line that doesn't share the load with any other appliance before the breaker box. AND it is preferred that 220 volts be dedicated to the dryer alone. In older breaker boxes where each line is 110 volts, this means dedicating TWO lines to that appliance alone.
Switching the cord over to a three prong could constitute a safety hazard and increase the chances of the line overheating.
OK first if you change your cord from the 4 prong to 3 prong you will probably void your warranty.
Second the old way of hooking up a 3 prong was using the white , black and red wires the bare copper (ground( was not used or it was put under a mounting screw. The white wire was always used.
You do not sound like you have a very good idea of what to do.
I recommend hiring an electrician, it will cost you but you will sleep better not worrying about a fire.
