How to touch up Scratches on old Piano?

Question:Hello,
I have got an old piano which I was given. It has a glossy dark reddish brown finish which is quite badly scratched in places . Has anyone an easy and cheap idea to touch it up? I have heard about wax crayons and shoe polish... Please let me know.

Answers:
If the scratches are really deep, I would suggest filling with wood putty. You can blend different colors together to get the closest match.

If they are simply superficial scratches, use Howard's Restore-A-Finish:

This product is the best I've found. I'm an antique dealer, and I use it on all the furniture I buy. Their other products work just as well.

Shoe polish works.
Professional movers use axle grease from their trucks if they scratch something. (It makes the scratch look old, leading the customer to believe they didn't damage the furniture)
They just smear the grease in the scratch & rub it with a rag.
they sell furniture crayons and you try to match the colors with what you have.
also a pecan half or walnut half rubbed on the scratches can help to hide them.
if you get a brazil nut and cut it in half, rub the scratch with the inside part of the nut and the scratch should disappear. Then polish as normal.
Minwax makes a great scratch cover marker that you apply just like a pen, then wipe off the excess. It comes in various wood stain colors from light to dark and I believe is under $10. You can purchase it at Home Depot in the paint department. It works great on antiques!
When ever I have a scratch on my piano I need to cover up, I use a furniture polish called "Old English." It contains wood stain and covers the scratches up with no problem.
