Which type of wood router would I need to be able to bore a hole in a door in order to fit a deadbolt lock?

Question:I need it to be able to bore a neat square hole baout 5 inches deep. Which tool would I need?

Answers:
All you need is a drill and a hole what is referred to as a hole saw. The hole saw goes over a drill bit, the drill bit is to start the hole. Just make sure you get the right size, the correct size will be listed in the instructions with the deadbolt. The will also include a template so you place it the proper distance from the edge of the door. Any hardware store will have them, and they are around $5

You won't use a router for this.

You require a morticiser. It goes into an electric drill.
You can buy a jig from the Wolf range of tools that fits on the drill and makes it look a bit like a router. But you use the plunge option for accuracy rather than startup
Most DIY shops don't stretch to these you will need a high quality tool shop
a router could be used for making mortises but you will still have to square of the holes with a wood chisel.with a router you will need to make a jig to cut the mortise in the correct place.you may find it much simpler to use a brace and bit or an elactric drill with a wood bit and then finnish by squaring of the mortise with a chisel
Hole saw you can get them to fit any drill just about anywhere
Go to any good quality home store i.e. Lowes , Home Depot and they should have tool kits for sale that have everything you need for this. All you need to supply in addition to the kit is a drill powererful enough to do the job, just about any regular corded drill will work or a cordless that is about 18v or more should work.
I answered in another section of Answers but have to ask. Do you have the deadbolt already? Are you sure you need a square hole? Is the door 5" thick? I have not seen a router bit that will cut that deep.
you need a electric drill and an auger or flat bit. (most deadlocks need an 18mm bit, but you have to check on the box).
Take door off frame if possible, if not put a wedge under door to make sure it doesnt move.
1. put a centre line in the edge of the door and mark the position of where you want the deadlock.
2. Drill a series of holes down your centreline using drill and bit.
3. use a hammer and large wood chisel (25mm - 32mm) to square out the hole until the body of the lock fits snugly in the hole.
4. Draw around the face plate of the lock on edge of door and if you want you can now use a router with a straight cutting bit and a template to remove the wood so the lock can sit flush in the door. this is quite a complicated process if you havent done it before, i would recommend that you use a hammer & small chisel (18mm) to remove the wood it will be a lot easier and safer.
5. transfer the measurement of the keyhole position to the face of the door (front and back) and drill a hole for the keyhole (6mm bit).
6. fit the keyhole plates to the door to the door.
7. position keep (thats where the bolt goes) to doorframe and remove the wood with hammer and chisel, fix plate and then see if your lock works.
my biggest tip is to leave yourself plenty of time and dont rush.
good luck
It is impossible to drill a square hole !! you will have to drill a hole and make it square with a sharp wood chisel, a mortiser needs to be fitted to a pillar drill which means the door would have to be removed and it's a two man job, and not within the scope of the normal DIY person.
I take it you are drilling into the edge of the door so measure the width of hole for the case and drill a series of holes vertically.
Trim with a chisel to square it up and slide in the bolt. Once you are happy it will fit mark around the face plate and the chisel out so that it will sit flush with the door edge.
Place the bolt against the face of the door and mark where the lock mechanism will go.
I think the size is 11/8" for the cylinder, and 7/8" for the bolt.
Why not use a hammer&chiesel
