Dandelions: Are there non-toxic treatments for dandelions on lawns other than manual labor?
Question:Our lawn is filled with dandelions but I don't want to put chemicals on it. Are there non toxic treatments that are not labor intensive?
Answers:
Sprinkle a little table salt directly on the dandelion at the base of it (where it comes out of the ground and forms a cup shape). Do this in the morning when the dandelions are damp from dew.
This works extremely well for any weed that does not thrive in brackish conditions. Be careful that you don't use too much or spill over onto your grass as it will kill the grass as well but the grass will grow back quickly.
I discovered this one evening about 15 years ago when killing slugs with salt. I got it on a bunch of dandelions where the slugs were and within a couple days the dandelions were brown and receded into the ground. I've used it ever since on weeds that I don't want to use chemicals on (thistle, blackberry, raspberry, mullen weed, etc. etc.). I have a bird intensive yard so I hesitate to use any lawn chemicals that may resemble overspill seed.
go to your local home depot and ask for a selective herbicide. selective herbicides are made specially for weeds like dandilions. they are for broad-leafed weeds (such as dandilions). ask about a fast working one. these herbicides have special formulas that will not harm your grass.
hope this helps :)
Everything you put into your mouth is chemical. Don't be "chemo-phobic". You just about can not purchase a harsh chemical today.
Your only other option is to try and drown them in water. This will work, eventually-but is will drive up you water bill and probably kill your grass too.
For crying out loud-go to Lowe's or Home Depot and get a "safe- weed and feed " fertilizer for you lawn, and be done with it.
the only thing that I have found that works on dandelions is Vigaro weed and feed, it worked on my 1/2 acre in no time.
try pouring vinegar on the things
