Why are black light bulbs illegal?
Question:for home use
Answers:
they r supposed to create special effects for parties.
i think using it at home for long time could cause some eye irritation due to its high wavelength.
I dont know and i have never saw a black light bulbs.
THEY ARENT.CAN BE BOUGHT AT WALMART IF YOU ARE TALIKING ABOUT UV BULBS.
Some are, some aren't it depends on the strengh and frequency spectrum of the light. Some lights (probably the good ones!) put out the same king of light that can cause sunburns and more importantly skin cancer and eye damage.
They are not illegal in the United States, nor are they considered harmful.
Black lights come in two ways -- fluorescent tubes and incandescent bulbs. Each type works slightly differently.
Regular fluorescent tubes are glass and contain a little mercury vapor. When electricity is passed through the tube it reacts with the mercury causing it to create light. The mercury atoms emit energy in the form of light photons. These photons are mostly in the ultraviolet range of the light spectrum. We cannot see this light, so a white phosphor coating on the light tube is used to convert the UV energy into visible light.
A black light works the same way, except the tube is made of dark blue glass. It is coated with a special phosphor that blocks visible light and harmful ultraviolet rays. Only the rays of ultraviolet light that are harmless pass through with a blue and violet visible light, resulting in the distinctive glow called a "black light".
The incandescent bulb type works on a similar principle, but the source of light is a filament instead of an electrically charged gas. Bulb black lights are generally less powerful than tube black lights.
Things that glow under a black light contain phosphors, which appear to glow in ultraviolet light.
