What is the best affordable deck stain?
Question:I used Behr two years ago, because it was affordable and on sale at my local Home Depot. I regret using this product, I have had a frustrating experience with it. I want some recommendations before just choosing something else. I am an amateur, and this is only the second time I have stained a deck, so something that is a little forgiving would be nice. I am looking for a stain that gives a nice, warm, wet look, and let's the wood still show through.
What would be the best stain to go with that can be picked up at Home Depot, Rona, etc.?
Answers:
A product called CWF can be used to give you the results you are looking for. Final appearance will vary slightly depending on what type of wood you are applying it to (pressure treated, cedar, etc.) the age and condition of the wood and how well you clean it and remove old stain. If it is in full sun most of the time you can cut the lifespan of it in half but if it is in shaded or partly shaded area your finish will look better longer. Also, in order to keep it looking its best for as long as possible, keep the deck clean and power wash it lightly about 2 times a year. Your finish will be rubbed and abraded off if it is left dirty and it gets a lot of foot traffic grinding it into the finish and ruining its appearance. Whatever you do, stay away from Thompsons, it is junk.
The best and the cheapest is sump oil, If you have a car or a friend has one ask for some old sump oil its dirty and very good to keep the creepie crawlies out. Nip down your local garage and get enough for your timber fence, The stain will allow the colour to show through and to top it off a cheap varnish on top,
