Painting Plaster?
Question:Hi,
I've got a wonderful old home from the 1940s and its got plaster (smooth) walls ... solid as a rock. There are a couple of coats of paint already on the wall, I'm wondering what the best type of paint is for indoor plaster?
Any thoughts would be appreciated.

if your home is that old its going to have oil on there already. I would head to your nearest paint store and get some primer, ask about the products. there are oil primers that will hold latex, its either terminatior or eliminator, check duron. i'd scuff up the surface first..just some light sanding will give your primer a better grip on the wall, then finish coat with latex.
Well, Latex would be the best. Almost every indoor paint application calls for latex to be used. It's easy to clean up, coats well, and is the most commonly used pain. Sometimes oil-based is used for faux painting interiors, but they are phasing out oil-based paints due to their unfriendly environmental factors.
As for the sheen of the paint, I guess that depends on what you like! I always use flat - it hides blemishes in the wall (because it's not shiny) and if you have to re-paint an area at a later time, you don't have to re-do the wall, because it blends right in.
Latex is always the best, but i guarantee the plaster has been painted with oil already. Latex will peel off from the oil. Oil based is the way to go in this type of home.
