I have cleaned my wood deck but now it is very mottled with light and dark places.?

Question:I scrubbed it with TSP and bleach then a deck cleaner. I want to put a clear finish on it but I can't get rid of the blotchiness. I also tried straight bleach in spots. Nothing seems to work. Do I have to sand it or could I try a stripper of some sort. I thought this was going to be easy!

Answers:
If the wood is in good condition, you may consider, applying a wood stain, then go ahead and then a sealer/clear finish.

If however the wood is rough and worn, it might be best to go ahead and sand it down before you stain & seal.

Wetting it down with oxalic acid should get it lighter and more even. Might have to go to a deck supplier, maybe a home center to get it.
restain your deck
Personally, for the very best appearance, I'd rent a commercial sander and go over the deck once or twice before putting a finish on it. Believe me, the money spent on the sander will be well spent!
