How do I fix a serious clog in the master pipe?

Question:When running the clothes washing machine, dirty sludge water backs up into the kitchen sink. Whats the best way to fix whatever is wrong? I tried a snake, but I think the clog may be too far down.

Answers:
That might be one for a professional. Renting a longer snake is about $45. A plumber will charge about $60, and clean up after himself (as well as guarantee the work)

get a longer snake
Get it roto rootered. I have that when the roots of trees grow into the sewer line.
I would try a liquid plumber like product.Use the whole bottle and pour it directly into the pipe where the washer hose goes into.I like the liquid stuff because it's heavier than water and will flow thru the water and down along the pipe to the clog.(My theory) I've had good luck 75 - 90 % of the time with these. Better than the powders, for sure.
If you think you could have tree roots in your drain, there are products out there to put in the drain to "eat" the roots too.Read those directions tho, they may not work unless you have some flow ?
You might have to go down to the master pipe, remove the cover and clean it out there. I've seen it done but have never done it myself. It is very messy and smells horrible. I would first try a drain cleaner, it may take two bottles.
get a plumbing contractor to give you an estimate
