Can you self-teach dress-making?

Question:I have had my sewing machine for years and made a few cushions, a table cloth and throws - (as you see very basic).

I never had sewing classes at school like a lot of people, but i have this creative urge to design and make clothes, also some nice things for around the house.

Can i teach myself without going on a course, if so how?

Answers:
Yes, You can absolutely teach yourself without going to a course. I am self taught and I can and have made anything I can think of from a bridal gown and tuxedo to a table cloth. The thing to do is just jump in and buy a basic pattern to start. After you have made the item from the pattern think of ways to personalize the design and make it your own. Another thing I have done in the beginning is to use 2 or three different patterns and blend them to make what you want. I just did that for my daughter in laws bridal gown - it was 2 patterns and my own design blended together. It turned out beautiful and everyone was asking her where she bought the dress!
I think the best sewers and the ones who never took a class because we don't know what we don't know and we will try anything.
Good luck and enjoy the trip to becoming a designer/sewer.

It is possible to self teach any subject you only have to have the willingness and patience to find and put into practice the information required.

There are probably some good books that have most if not all of the information that you need and then you only need to practice. The longer that you do anything the better you will get at whatever it is that you are doing.
Yes you can.It just takes practice. What I would do is buy a basic dress, blouse but not pants pattern. Pants are more difficult and you will just get frustated at first.

Lay the pattern out on some $1 fabric remnant that you don't like so you can practice. Pin the pattern on the wrong side of fabric and cut.

Then start creating by spacing out the fabric so you can add different elements to your pattern.

This just gives you a place to start without spending alot of time and money and frustration.
Sure can ! That is how I learned. Go to Joann Fabrics (or other Fabric Store) and get a simple pattern and some material that catches you eye. Start with a basic top or sundress.
Ask the saleperson for help if you need it. They will be more than willing to give you tips or ideas.

The secret to sewing is PATIENCE !!
And Have Fun !! :)))
