The first 2 answers may offer the most valid suggestion. Certainly "Liquid Nails" or some such, is very effective, and advises you press the work against the glue lines, than back it off to TAC then press again. Kinda like contact cement which you could also use.
Odd that masonite is a bathroom wall substance, but backing up melamime,,, it is used. The issue is that it's a pretty dense material, and if you don't know where the studs are, and don't have a power nailer using finish type nails, you may find that you'd have to use a hammer and "nail set"
I did a bathroom a few years ago using nothing but liquid nails, corner moldings, and silcone caulk, and I haven't heard any complaints.

an adhesive like liquid nails should do the trick
Run some sand paper over the old paneling to ruff it up and then use a good panel adhesive to attach new panels ( the old paneling has to be secure to the wall first)
