just go to your local Sherwin-Williams store and tell them EXACTLY what you want to do and they will then sell you the correct products. /
Considering that most may not be Fired, or glazed clay, and are absorbent,,,and most of all your desired USE after any application of "PAINT"... You have options of course.
If you intend using it for fire, certainly you should use heat resistant paints, but may not have a wide range of color choices.
If it's a decorative piece, indoors for example, that your cats may enjoy sleeping in, you might try oil or latex based paints. offering a larger range in color choices/tints/shades.
Consider a barbeque grille for example. Most often now they aren't strictly sold with lids or bodies that are painted/powder coated. Also consider auto engine paints that are designed to offer a finish resistant, to a point, in a heat range.
