Shower pulsing hot and cold help!?
Question:I have fit a shower (not electric) in my bathroom which works through my combi boiler and it is pulsing hot and cold. Can someone tell me why please?
Answers:
Maybe someone elsewhere is running a tap, or doing washing, and the hot water is cutting off to stop you burning.
Mine does the same if the toilet is flushed, the washing machine is on and filling itself etc
In our house if we turn the tap on downstairs the shower goes either hot or cold
not knowing how a combi works..an electric shower is constant ..other methods of heating water make the shower run hot and cold as other appliances are used in house IE taps and it may take the combi a while to compensate
if its not what the above have said you may need to look at the pressure regulator the dial inside the boiler it may need topping up via the mains to the correct pressure.assume like mine between 1 and 1 and half bar this affects the heating also. consult the manual or if you dont feel capable get a plumber to do it. to adjust back up, there is a valve connected to the main usually via a silver braided flexihose with 2 connections turn both on SLOWLY then wait for the dial to show the correct reading and turn back off.
good luck

You didn't say how long the hot to cold cycle time is.
Also, is your house on a well? You might have a situation where the water pressure varies as the pump runs and stops. If that's the case, be sure the storage tank has enough of a head of air so that the pump doesn't run and stop on a period of a few seconds.
Other than that, the plumbing may be setup in a way that encourages a "chaotic" flow -- an improperly plumbed water heater can allow hot water to flow backwards out the water inlet, and in certain situations, the entire system might oscillate.
This might take an experienced plumber to solve.
When you say "I have fit a shower", do you mean D I Y ? Firstly is the shower suitable for Combi use (mains pressure) ? If it is a thermostatic shower, are H & C correctly connected ? Is the Combi boiler suitable for your type of shower (some play games) ? Does the shower require flow restrictors to be fitted, some do, and are supplied with shower valve. Is the mains pressure sufficient to supply both H&C to valve? Try the shower without the shower head, does it perform better without the existing shower head ? Is the shower hose large bore (1/2") small bore hoses, and cheap restrictive shower heads can be responsible for erratic action, and thermostatic malfunctions. Large bore hose, and shower head suitable for power showers are preferred. At a guess I suspect the last sentence. A visit will cost you big!
hi wouldn't advise using a mixer shower ,power shower or thermostatic mixer shower with a com bi boiler because it cant cope with it especially if your radiators are on and eventally the diaphram will break inside the boiler (expensive job) .always use a electric shower fed off the mains cold water supply (15mm pipe) this way the shower feed is independant from the feed to the boiler .i am a plumber
