How do I install heat tape in a downspout off a flat roof.?
Question:i have a flat roof with no gutters and only one downspout. in the winter it sometimes freezes causing a leak into the house.

heat tape is usually in limited lengths,so get one that is at least the full length of the pipe and lay it straight up and down in one length. the barber pole wrap is for pressure pipes that can burst. all you want is flow. so set it and then insulate that side with a foam insulation strip and you are done. the heat will keep an open path for water to flow. flowing water wont freeze so it will clear a path from movement.
I would tend to think more in terms of putting some salt up there. Good luck

OPTION 2: wrap outside w/ tape remaining exter. in barber pole style to extent of tape
