When I was growing up, my family had a window fan that was in the upstairs landing window.?
Question:When it was in exhaust mode with the upstairs windows open, beautiful cool air would come in. Even in the heat of a Missouri summer, it would be downright chilly by 3 a.m. and we'd be pulling the covers up. I want a fan like like. Any suggestions? I now live in a one story house and because the windows are side closing except for the kitchen windows, the fan would have to go in there. If a window fan (with exhaust feature) was put into a kitchen window, would cool air blow into the other rooms. I realize that I'm not talking about a $30 fan . . more like $100 to $200. And my house is only 1250 sq. ft. total.

I think you would do better with a attic fan. Single story homes are not designed to pull air though the house like the old days.
The attic fan installs in the hallway ceiling and pulls air from all your windows and you will be shivering before night fall because it cools the attic at the same time.
You want a fan that blows about 3600 ft.³ per minute? It is a wind it makes you feel cool as the sweat evaporates off your body and this is the way it used to be done before the days of air conditioning. I have read that it is a relationship between the size of the room that you're trying to cool and the size of the fan although I am not sure at this point what size motor and fan you need. You are definitely on the right track to save money and energy. You want to pull the air from the shaded side of a house. This method of cooling, although cheaper, will not lower the humidity of your air. If you can live with that, you will save you money and the world somewhat from global warming from a your energy savings.
I have seen fans designed to fit into open windows. Typically they are two or three fans in a housing. Each fan is 6 to 10 inches depending on the model you buy. The housing has pull out wings to seal the open area around the fan enclosure. I haven't seen them for a while but if you checked with Home Depot or Lowe's you might find something. Another source could be a shop dedicated to fans. It would be a good deal more expensive but if they have it, then you can have it.
A search for "Window Fans" on the Internet could also be time well spent. Good luck and good hunting.
Try the link below, I just hope it is in your country.
Good Luck
Your not going to find one just like mom & dad had but the truth is that the old fans used as much energy as most small A/C units do now. I got some window fans from Wal-mart last fall for $10. They are normally $30 to $40. You should also vent out your attic. A fan up there will take out an extreme amount of heat. I used a cars coolant fan one time in my attic because it move a lot more air then any other fan I have found its same size.
The window fans will also work on their sides so you can put them in all the windows. You should have the ones on the shade side of the house pulling air into the house & the sun side pulling air out of the house. You should stay cool most of the day.
I don't run the A/C very often myself. With the fans running last night I pull the covers up about 12 o'clock last night.
