I want to change my kitchen light fixtures?
Question:I want to take down the old ones and replace them. Other than turn off the breaker first, Im not sure where to begin.
Answers:
remove the screws for the fixture. look at the wiring that is already set up.. everything should have the same setup. there should be on the new fixture notes that say hot or ground wire. Ive copy and pasted a site that will hopefully help you
That's pretty much it. You turn off the breaker, as you take the old one down, you get an idea of the wires and where they will connect, depending on what all you're doing that is. Maks sure that the new ones aren't too heavy and are going to require extra support. Then you stick the new one up there, put all the screws in all the right places. All typically have instructions with them that work great when followed.
Even though this can be a simple task your best bet is to recruit an electrician and while he is there ask and learn what you need to know for the next time. If you have a friend that has an electrical aptitude that's even better.
I say this because depending on the age of the house, who built it etc.. you can run in to problems like miswired fixtures, wires that are to short or when you cant tell what the wire colors are. All these things can be very dangerous. It would be better to let somebody "hold your hand" through this one and then maybe you could conquer next project or you might find you are more comfortable with a professional.
After you turn off the power remove the light glass and bulbs. Then unscrew the the screws holding the light in place. You might need to pull on it a little to see the wiring. Note where the black, white, and ground wires go to then remove them. take your new fixture and put it's black, white, and ground wires back in the same place the old ones came from. Screw the fixture back into place, put the bulbs and glass in place and enjoy your new lights. When you do the wiring make sure your new light wires make good contact and that no bare wire is showing from the black or white lines that might cause a short. good luck!
I have a similar job to do, also fitting a security light switch, but I can't add much to the first answer, just in the UK we call the connections Live (Red or Brown), and neutral (Blue), some modern places also have earth (Green and Yellow).
But I wanted to apologise to you for thinking you were lying about another answerer to a question, I saw your amended answer and awaited an oportunity to apologise.
Thankfully my answer was deleted, as I was blocked from the question and couldn't edit it.
