Best way to drill through wall tiles without cracking them? Please.?
Question:New bathroom tiles. Wish to add accessories.
Answers:
i quite agree with everyones answers., but you don't need a brand new masonry drill just a decent sharp one.this is the way i do it and i have not had any problems yet.
Mark your hole then with your bit in the drill place the drill bit on the mark, support the drill body with your one hand and with the other give the back of the body of the drill a sharp tap with the flat of your hand.
This will just crack the glaze under the drill tip, then just drill.
If you have single speed drill do it in short bursts until you get through, if you have slow speed start use that.
Make sure you run the drill up and down the hole a few times to clear any debri out as well because when you put your rawlplug in if too much presuure is inside you will crack the tile anyway.
Put sticky tape first on the place of the tile you are going to drill
you mark where you want to drill ,then place a criss cross piece of electrical tape over the mark youve made..that will stop any cracking ..hope this helps .
buy a tile bit.
make sure you are using a masonary bit then put a cross of tape where you want to drill. mask the tiles below or the grout will get dirty.
Start with a small drill bit (one sixteenth or one eighth at the largest) then increase size in small increases. DO NOT rush the job.
It is a real pain but this always works for me. Good luck.
Depends what size hole you require. Plasplugs do a range of water cooled diamond core bits from 6.5 mm to 25 mm. Use at a slow speed and NO hammer action. Anything larger will require you to use an Armeg core bit but these are quite expensive esp if you need the whole kit. Tugsten carbide jigsaw bits are also handy for very large hole.
You need a tile or glass cutter (or if you're desperate a hard screwdriver). Mark your spot on the tile and put the cutter on it and twist it backwards and forwards until you've ground a hole through the glazing on the surface of the tile. Now you can drill through with a masonry bit at low speed (and without the hammer). Once through the tile, you can drill the wall behind it at high speed and with hammer action.
Use a masonry bit .Stick clear tape over mark for hole and drill through the tape.
put sellotape over tile first
They make a drill bit just for going through tile. Use at slow speed as this bit will get very hot and will lose its sharpness.
This has worked for me on many occasions.
Have fun!

sellotape the area to be drilled to stop drill bit sliding or better still, gently chip the ceramic with the point of a dart
Drill bits specially made for ceramic.
You should go slow with a masonary bit. You should not apply excessive pressure to " rush" the job - this will cause a crack for sure. As suggested, tape over the tile first to help hold things together.
But also remember to pull the bit out occasionally and dip it in water to cool it down. if the bit gets too hot it will not longer cut, and it will expand - apply force to the surrounding tile - causing it to crack.
I would begin my hole with a rather small bit and move up to a larger size. I'd begin with 1/8 then complete in two additional stages - for a moderately small hole. A larger hole needs more stages to prevent damage to the tile.
first stick a small strip of masking tape where you want to drill, best to use a new drill bit, then put the point of the drill bit exactly in position and turn the chuck by hand a few turns to make a score mark.now give the drill a small squirt of juice, repeat until you have gone through the tile. Use a plastic plug of the right size but make sure it goes right through the tiles or side pressure could crack them Good luck from one who has drilled hundreds of tiles.
If you try this without the masking tape, the drill bit could skid giving you a nasty scratch on the tile surface.
eading the other answers,
addition...
If the bit gets hot it needed sharpening, like I said, use a new one, a hot bit dipped in water will only be useful for throwing at a mad dog. .
mark the tile where you want to drill, place a Cross of masking tape over the mark, if you use some very cheap thin masking tape, you should be able to see the mark through the tape, transfer the mark on to the masking tape.
Then using a masonry bit in your drill (turned off) press the drill bit against the ceramic tile, and turn it using some pressure but not too much, this will score the ceramic face of the tile.
Now take your drill, make sure its not on hammer mode, turn it onto a very low speed and drill very carefully and slowly.
Although if your gonna be doing this a lot, a tile cutting drill bit will do the job
Oh also make sure to wear goggles, and a dust mask thing as it can be very dusty.
use a specialist bit that does not have the wings on the end like a masonry bit has
without pressing trigger on the drill hold on the mark for drilling and rotate the point of the bit on this mark to crack and score through the glaze.
now use drill on lowest speed in a pulse action (press trigger ,release trigger etc)
forget tape and forget masonry bits!!
put some masking tape on the tile and mark where you want the hole, then using a cordless/electric drill with a masonary drill ,drill the hole, but remember do not have the hammer action turn on
depends if you want a small hole use a masonry drill bit but if you want a big hole you should use a tile drill and put masking tape over where you are drilling as this stops the drill from slipping oh and another good bit of advice is don't use the drill on the hammer setting!
Use tape at the point of the hole and buy a masonry/tile bit. Use a high speed drill and be careful.
Make a cross of electrical tape at the centre of where you want to drill. With the smallest drill bit you have make a small hole in the tape on slow speed. Put in the bigger drill bit into the small hole speed up the drill make your hole.
Do not forget to rawlplug the hole as you could still crack the tile when you tighten the screw. The rawlplug should act as a buffer.
If you know what you're doing, a masonary drill bit but don't have the drill on hammer and don't bother with tape.
If you don't know what your doing or a DIY'er then try various other ways and sticky tape with little crosses on.
Just turn the chuck with your hand so the bit scrapes the pencil dot then drill. Just hold the drill right. Practise makes perfect.
hire a builder or a skilled handy man
i bought a tile/glass bit at loews worked great looks like a spade
bosch make a range of drill bits called construction bits that drill multi surfaces, suggest 6.5mm. what i do is mask the area then mark your holes. drill the holes on a fairly low speed to star,t do not use hammer or you will crack the tiles. i have my hoover hose running just below the bit to catch the dust. have fun.
