You can build them out of 1 x's, but make sure not to buy the pressure treated ones. The warp and split too often. Attach the 1 x's with hot dipped galvanized trim nails. Screws are too big around and may cause the wood to split.
They can be built out of 1"X10" or 12" boards that you purchased from your local hardware store, all you need is a base and top along with 4 sides that can be nailed or screwed together, try to pick out the best boards...
