How do I take off fake brick?
Question:I have on two separate walls, my fireplace in between the two walls. They put the fake brick to blend in with the real brick on the fireplace. This isn't a paint over the brick project. I want my wall to be flat like the rest of the walls. Parts of the fake brick have chipped off. Please help, don't know what the brick is made of. Does anyone have an idea to how to take the fake brick off?
Answers:
"Z-brick" was very popular in the 70's. It was glued in-place. There really is no "neat" way to remove it...use a hammer and chisel to pry the "bricks" off. In all liklihood, the wall surface beneath will have to be replaced because the glue will not come off. You might want to cut out the bricks and the drywall all at once just to save time. Install new 1/2" drywall at the openings, tape, spackle and finish the drywall, then paint it.
If the fake brick appears to be glued on, I would try heating it with a hot air gun. Or you could try prying them off with a heavy duty scraper.
Three pound sledgehammer and knock the hell out of it. You might need a crow bar if theres wire mesh underneath. Either way, it's just a smash and tear job. Once you get a hole started, you can probably knock the bar in behind it and pry it off.
a good scraper would work
Any way you do it will ruin the finish of the wall behind. It will be faster and result in a better job if you remove everything down to the studs then install a new drywall surface.
This will be tough until you get a hole broken through, then you should be able to remove big sections with a nail bar.
