When assembling a two-piece toilet, how can I keep the tank straight?
Question:I have an American Standard with the tank tilting forward, which is uncomfortable. When I level the tank, water leaks from the bolts. When I finally tighten the bolts sufficiently, the tank is leaning forward. I notice that the bowl has two ridges to support the tank, and the back one is higher than the front one. When the tank is straight, it does not touch the front ridge.

It sounds more like the bowl is really the problem, that IT is tilted slightly which causes the tank when seated properly to lean. The flange is there for a reason, to compress the gasket and when seated correctly, does not leak. It is completely possible to mount the bowl incorrectly and have it not leak because of the wax ring which conforms to the pipe and bowl as the bowl is clamped in place by the hold-down bolts. I'll bet if you put a carpenter's level across the bowl, forward and back and side to side, you find it tilted. This was a problem in a older house I used to live in, only it was tipped sideways a bit, just enough to be a little uncomfortable.I left it as-is since it was a rental, but you might consider remounting the bowel and using a level to be sure it really is. My guess is whenever it was mounted, it was done by eye.Try the level and let me know. Here is a link to replacement instructions.
A.S. is a premium product, so lets assume no design flaw for now. did u check the floor for level? if the floor is off level this could pitch the tank foreward. check at a home store where the toilet is on display to see if they all are the same. if this is the case change to a kohler or a new brand Toto, i have heard lots of good things about
try replacing the asp gasket
