Painting Shingles White?
Question:Koolseal says not to use their product on asphalt shingles. We got older black shingles, like normal its HOT. How can I make them white? Paint? Any ideas welcome but prefer simple and cheap. Mist system? Is there a glue for shingles?
Answers:
Do not paint shingles. It won't adhere and frankly it will be an eyesore and very messy. If your roof and home is too hot, it means you need to ck to see if you have adequate ventilation. Do you have wind turbines on your roof? if not that is a great place to start or using soffit vents. Your roof needs ventilation or the shingles can actually melt. Turbines are the least expensive way I can think of, about 100 dollars or so , don't forget to caulk to prevent water leaks.
Yes there is a glue for shingles, but it comes on the shingle itself, take protective stripping off, place down and then hand nail shingle in at least 3 places. I believe they are marked on shingle. Any home improvement store or hardware store should be able to help you. If you need to replace shingles, they should also have shingles. If possible take one that has blown off and take it with you for easy matching.
If you are in storm area, have ins. come out and access roof.
When it comes to replacing shingles, choose a different color
I hope all this helps. But truly it isn't b/c shingles are black, it is lack of ventilation.
Have a great day.
.
most older shingles were put on with tar, I don't know about the painting part, never heard of it done
CHECK WITH SEVERAL ROOFING EXPERTS.
A WHITE PAINTED ROOF DOESN'T SOUND GOOD..IT COULD EVEN LOWER YOUR VALUE AND ALSO STAND OUT AROUND NEIGHBORS HOMES.
HARD QUESTION.
do u mean shingles on a roof? why are u going to paint them? install heat activated fan in attic is a better option. i imagine u can use ordinary latex house paint. i know when i spill some on the roof, it sure doesnt come off. umight try painting one of the shingles and see how it turns out.
Technically, painting shingles is a bad idea. If I had not seen it done, I would swear it would never work.
A local subdivision requires red roofs. Builder did not know (don't ask how he failed to notice every other roof was red), put on a nice brown roof. Association had a fit, told him to fix it. He painted it red. You really could not tell it had been painted unless you looked for it.
At the time, I was sure he would be replacing the roof within a year. That was 12-15 years ago. You can tell now that it was painted. Actually, I guess you can tell something is odd. I can tell it was painted because I saw it done. No leaks, no other problems, just needs painted again.
This is one of the few times I would say no primer. Also, oil based paint for this one. The oil will give a bit more with the expansion and contraction of the shingles. I probably would be afraid to try it, unless replacing the roof in the near future is an option. Again, this really should not work.
i would not try because the heat would melt the paint or chip it but i would go to a hardware store and ask.
no don't paint . It will look horrible. and like normally black shingles are hot. You cannot make them white. you can replace them with white ones if you have to
wow, you are just asking for nightmares...
install a power attic fan, it will make a huge difference with out a giant headache and mess...
Painting the shingles white will not make a noticeable difference even if the roof is black. You would be better to spend the money adding proper ventilation and insulation which will make a difference.
