Turning the unit on its side will not only drain water all over your floor but will burn up the compressor as the compressor is designed to stay in the upright position to allow the oil to splash on the moving parts, Now what you can do is build your platform to allow the entire unit to set out side with the front of unit up tight to the window opening and that will work.

There's no other way for operate A/C .For fitting unit make another opening in wall .
everyone has got it right. Will not work on its side, but my suggestion would be to put it through the wall if possible. I have done this myself and found it to be easy to do and then you still retain the use of your window.
Only if you want to fry the entire unit in short order. AC units are designed only to be used in one position. The oil used in the pump will not lubricate properly, nor will the drainage system for any moisture which the unit removes from the air.
Hell No the compressor in the unit must set right up if its on its side you will burn it smooth out as the compressor is a sealed unit and the freon operates within it
No don't even think about it, you'll mess up the air conditioner for good if you do that, you can't ever lay something with freon and a compressor on its side or it won't ever work again.
