Is is legal to build your own home in california without a contractor licence?

Question:I would think you would still need to have it inspected, but could I do most of the work myself? And would I ever be able to sell the house at a later date, or would that be imposible?

Answers:
I'm in Kern County and you can do it all in this county as well. Yes it would still need to be inspected, engineered, etc. As long as the house has been finalized by the Bldng dept you can sell it as any other contractor built house. actually out here it would be a plus...

you would have to get a building permit and have all inspections, but you can do most of it yourself. the electrical and plumbing have to be done by liscnsed contractors. good luck.
It depends upon your local municipality. I'm in OC and just upgraded most of my homes electrical all by myself. I designed it all, pulled the Permits, got the inspections, etc. and I'm not a Contractor. Talk with the local officials. Some cities require a Licensed Electrician and Plumber.

Good Luck!
You bet you can build it yourself, this is called being an owner - builder. The sticky part is that most banks won't lend money for the project, unless there is a contractor doing the project. Good luck.
