How long should I wait to stain my newly build pressure treated deck?
Question:I'm getting many different opinions. Right away, couple of weeks, in the fall, or after one year?
Answers:
Minimum of 30 days. That's what my Thompson's water seal stain says on the can. I'm sure they know a little something about this subject. ;)
Someone once told me 4-6 months.
I think you should wait a year, or at least that is what I hear. The wood needs time to dry out and fade and wear down a bit before stain can stick to it.
contact your local lumber yard representative..mine told me to do it right away.and then to follow manufactures instructions for repeat treatments
Minimum of six months. We bought a new, just built, house, and one morning several months after we moved in, a painter showed up and said he was here to stain the deck. We asked why at that time, and he said because you can't stain the untreated wood until it is at least 6 months old.
I don't know where you live but I've just finished one and did it right away because of the scorching sun in Florida it will protect my investment (p.t. wood is not cheap) these days.
Don't wait to long a few dry day in the sun is enough . You use
to have to wait when they were using CCA treated lumber .
Now it is ACQ treated lumber , which has adverse effect when
the sun is on it . First thing for this pretty new lumber is to
screw it down tight before the sun hits it for to long . The best
thing to do is to dry it and stain both sides before installation .
Then you know its protected from all weather , rain run off ,
humidity etc., Anyway don't wait that's a old rule for CCA lumber which is no longer made because of the health problems that came with it .
Brian, wait a min of a year, trust me on this one
