How do I make a self-return with crown molding on a corner cutting in position?
Question:I want to end my crown molding at the end of an open wall that is not perpendicular to another wall. The spring angle of my molding is 38 degrees. The wall to ceiling angle is 90 degrees. I would appreciate any information or references/ websites that anyone would recommend on how to make this self-return not "in the flat position" on the mitre saw. I appreciate your thoughts in advance.

I have found this site to be the best when it comes to crown:

You are asking the right questions, I think you will find your answers there.
I'm not sure I follow you. So your molding is already mounted on the wall/ceiling? Not sure how you would handle that besides a dovetail hand saw.
If you trying to cap the end flush with the next room or wall, trace the molding onto a 1/8 inch plywood, cut out with a coping saw leaving a good excess to sand off after you glue and tack it on.
Also try looking at the links here...
if you are cutting your crown upside down and backwards with the saw on a 45. mark wall length on what will be the top front of the crown, sight down blade to line its OK to cut long and creep up on the line. and for your return cut the miter first the same way but opposite then lay crown flat on saw short end to you and cut just a little 1/16 past miter i usually put the return on first than hang the crown.
