How do you dismantle a built in shelf and desk unit in old house?
Question:The house is from around 1960, and has these ugly built in shelving units and desk. They are all very solid, but I think they are ugly and need to go. How do I go about dismantling and removing from the drywall? All I can tell is that they were either bolted in there or nailed. The shelving units are all glued together and very sturdy and won't budge.
Any advice will be appreciated. Thanks!
Answers:
you will need a decent crowbar and hammer, safety glasses. and a utility knife.
first score a line through the paint or caulk that may be holding the units in place. then take c-bar and hammer and pry it away from the areas you know it is nailed to the wall.
as for the desk, take all drawers out . look inside to see where it is screwed to the wall and unscrew. So you may need a drill also.
hope that helps
Use a wonder bar and long, thin piece of wood to pry against. There will be some damage to the drywall - but if you pry against a long piece of wood, rather than the drywall itself it will minimize the damage.
