Turpentine/paint thinner?

Question:i am repainting a metal cabinet with rust paint. the paint needs to be thinned a little bit. the can says to use mineral spirits or paint thinner. all i have is turpentine. is there any harm in using the turpentine to thin it? it is a tool cabinet that will be staying inside the house.

Answers:
Don't use turpentine to thin modern enamels, especially those intended for metal. Mineral spirits are NOT the same as turpentine. The stuff sold as "Paint thinner" is mineral spirits.

Turpentine is made from pine sap and is obsolete, except for artist's oils.

its the same stuff... but if it latex paint just add some water... so u dont have to deal with the smell. if the door is metal scuff sand it with some sand paper then prime it then paint itif u put oil paint on a metal door it will last for years but latex on metal might bubble without primer. sorry i mean cabinet i just re did my front door thats why i said that
use turpentine to thin your oil base paint.
