Install pet door in brick wall?
Question:We are turning our garage into a bonus room. I would like the dogs to be able to go outside during the day to do their business, as of right now, they have to stay inside because of the heat. I know that installing a real door with a pet door would involve moving wall studs, etc, so I could install a pet door instead.
What would be involved in adding a pet door from the back of the new bonus room to outside? Our home is 2 years old, brick outside with sheetrock inside. What kind of special tools are needed to cut through the brick? Do I REALLY need to hire a professional or is this something hubby could do? How does this affect the value of the home? Estimated price?
Answers:
Sure your husband can do it if he has the skills. Im not trying to sound rude but if your husband has no skilled labor training I wouldnt let him do it. He'd have to cut through the drywall, insulation, brick. Not sure how it would affect the value of a home I personally will never install a doggy dog because not everyone wants a dog door in their home. My father in law installed one in his house has had over 25 couples view his home which is for sale none were excited about the prospect of having to "fix" the hole where the doggy dog is (its in his laundry room cut through the brick as your going to do). I'd just put it in a door easier to replace when you want to move.
If your husband has the knowledge to tear out the area for the door frame in the bricks, then great. If not, get a few estimates from home contractors. Also, I bought my Hale brand dog door from http://www.moorepet.com (they also have a huge selection of other dog doors). David Ritterling gave me a lot of tips on selection and installation. They are great, and the door I bought is top quality.
Your really need to hire a brick mason-there are different kinds of brick and you could cause serious damage if you don't know what your doind. My husbands a brick mason and we have seen some bad stuff where people tried to Do it yourself. Whole walls can all of the sudden come down.Be sure that the contractor is licensed though otherwise you might end up with another garage door. LOL-good luck hon
I have to agree with Texas angel with a twist. I think that if you install a door with a doggy door then everything will be fine. People can always change out a door. I would hire a professional, because you not only have studs, and insulation, you have wiring to be concerned with. This bonus room, will you have central ac? Have you considered the cooling and heating factor? People have a hard time selling homes with a garage conversion. Just some things to consider before you take a wet saw to the brick.
to summarize the answers above... don't do it.
