Can a window unit (AC) be used in a building without a window, just a door to let air in?

Some of the answers here are good as far as they go. If you are planning on putting a regular window unit in a room without mounting it through a wall or window, you should not do it. The way the unit works is to circulate air across cooling coils. The compressor exchanges heat for cool so the unit is generating heat on the back side when providing cool to the inside. The heat and cooling will pretty much offset each other while the electric bill will go up.

If you live in a dry area, there are some special indoor cooling units that use evaporating water to cool the air. These are similar to the old "swamp" coolers, but they are designed for this particular use and don't cool a large area.

Hope this helped. - Good Luck

yep, a hole can be cut in a wall to install the A/C.
Door?
You can install a window unit through the wall. Just cut a hole for it and brace it well. It needs to be sealed from the exhaust. I do not see how you could do that in a door.
As long as the unit does go into the wall (i.e. there is a hole cut out in the wall for the AC unit to be installed. That is b/c there will be water dripping out of it and it needs to be disposed of.
you might be better off with just a cooling fan as ACs can be quite heavy.
yes and no. The house doesn't have to have a window but a hole has to be present. If not you will have a big mess. Window units drain water to the outside of the structure and also bring air from outside to inside through a series of filters and things. You really need a window or a hole cut out of the wall.
yes, the name window AC is just coz it is installed in a window like space in a wall. There is no harm if you do not have window in your room.
It will work just as good if you close the door, set in on a chair or something else strong enough to hold it.Doing it this way you circulate the air already in the room and it gets colder faster
I think the best answer, not very effectively, unless you can block off the whole door with just the back of the unit on the other side.

The amount of heat coming out of the back of an A/C unit is greater than the amount of cool coming out the front. Therefore, if the unit just sat in the middle of the room, the room would heat up. You may have a cool breeze on you, but the rest of the room would be worse.

There are A/C units that have a hose that goes outside. One of those in a room with the hose going out the door and maybe a sheet hanging down the door would work quite well.

I just saw one of these units at Costco.
You can purchase indoor A/C units. Check with appliance stores, big boxes (HD, Lowe's, Menard's, etc.). Cost around $550.00.
