How do you make a door way in a support wall?

Question:

Answers:
You will need to install a header across the opening to spread the load to a double stud on either side. The outside stud goes from the floor plate to the ceiling plate. The inside stud, nailed to the first, supports a short, horizontal 2x4 which in turn supports the header. The header consists of two on-edge 2x6, 2x8, 2x10, or 2x12's that go across the top of the doorway and transfer the load from upstairs to the two inside studs on the sides of the opening. (There are other ways to make a header, especially if the space is bigger than 11.5 inches.)

I would strongly suggest finding a carpenter to at least supervise this job, and maybe even do it for you.

First you will have to check with your county or city cousil or city planning department to find out if you need a permit to do that or not. After you find out if your allowed to do the work, You cand then decide where you put the door. Once you have chosen remember that you will have to support the wall before you cut anything out. You will put up double or king studs on either side of your door opening. Then you will have to build a header to fit your studs. When you have put the king studs in place remove the ones inbetween them. Then place your header, secure, trim and whala.
you need some acro props to support either side (tool hire shop) knock the hole through & then you need to put in a lintle.
Do it carefully and get advice first from a structual engineer-

Some good advice already but also don't forget that you will most likely require Building Regulations approval - contact council
In the first instance contact building control and use acros and boards to support the ceilings either side. Mark out the door size opening ie for 6x6--2x6 door inc lining for door ect.
Knock out the top section of wall, head of would be frame and set a concrete lintel to the width of wall with a overhang of 6-8 inches either side of proposed and set in cement. Once set carefully knock out the rest of the wall and you have an opening.
Make good for the timber lining to go in for the relevant door size and secure. Always inform the concils building control.
