How do you tell the diference between turpentine and paint thinner?

Question:I have a pop bottle with clear liquid for cleaning paint brushes. i'm not sure which one it is. is there an easy way to tell the 2 apart just by looking at them or by the smell?

Answers:
Turpentine smells like pine rosin since it is pine sap that has been boiled down. Mineral spirits (paint thinner), smells more like a petroleum product. Turpentine has not been used as a paint thinner probably since about 1978.

Well turpentine does have quite a unique smell and if you checked it against a known turpentine source you would propably be able to tell if it was turpentine.

But Turpentine is a paint thinner - it was the original paint thinner but laterly has been mainly replaced by White Spirit - which does exactly the same job.
