How much grass seed do i need?
Question:I am getting ready to plant grass in a section of my backyard that is 15' x 75', irregularly shaped. I am trying to see which is more cost effective out of sod or seed, so i need help deciding how much seed i would need. I plan to seed very heavily because the area has never been grassy- rock landscaping- and i think it may be harder to grow grass there. any advice?
Answers:
I did the same job a few weeks ago. I used seed and after 1 month Its almost ready to cut. Much cheaper than turf.
Firstly remove the existing grass which is hard work. Pick and shovel job. Then beat the soil with a shovel and rake out the grass. Level the top soil with a rake.
The next step is to buy your seed. I suggest wilkinsons hardare and Diy chain. I bought mine there and it cost about £20 which was the only cost. Turf probably would have cost £300-400.
Spread the seed evenly and rake lightly. I watered the garden every day and its now growing nicely.
Hope this helps.
You have 1125 square feet of ground to cover. Check the coverage rate on the brand seed (and size container) and figure it that way. Add a few pounds for heavy seeding. I am sure seeding will be cheaper than sod.
What sensible man said. Seed will be much cheaper than sod.
